Pens Offseason
« on: June 25, 2016, 12:59:34 PM »

Pens drafted a goalie with their first pick and then took a RW.

Biggest news is they traded Bennett to New Jersey for a 3rd round pick.  Since then they have drafted 3 straight D Men.

Pens drafted 2Finns, 1 Swede with their 6 picks.

#55 Filip Gustavsson, G, 6'2" 184lbs, rated the top European goalie prospect
#61 Kasper Bjorkqvist, RW, 6'1" 198lbs, 28g/38a (66 pts) in 45 games
Rd 3 Connor Hall, D, 6'2" 192lbs, Kitchner, sounds like a defensive tough guy type
Rd 4 Ryan Jones, D, 5'11", 186lbs Lincoln USHL, 112 PIMs in 60 games
Rd 6 Niclas Almari, D, 6'1", 167(!)lbs, Finland
Rd 7 Joe Masonius, D, 6' 181lbs, UConn

Rutherford said they wanted Defense early but he couldn't pass up the goalie.  He didn't think they kid would fall that far so he jumped on it.

The speculation is that with Murray, this kid's career could overlap a bit. But, if he's as good as reported, then it makes more sense for the Pens to keep Fleury and groom Gustafsson as his long term replacement and allow Murray to be exposed in the expansion draft.

from what I am reading that goalie was an awesome pick by the Pens. I would love to go with what you are saying bfgrad, but unfortunately, I don't think Fleury is fitting in to their future plans. My feeling is Rutherford is holding Fleury for this season's trade deadline in February and see where the team is at that point. But that is just speculation on my part.

I'm not even sure who the Pens are starting in goal this season yet

Will have to trade 1 of them at some point or I guess take chance on losing 1 for nothing with the Expansion Draft.

Matt Cullen is delaying his retirement announcement. Apparently the Pens would like to try and sign him

Not Pens related but big news today as Montreal trades Subban to Nashville for Weber and Stamkos spurns Toronto and Detroit to resign with Tampa Bay.

Beau Bennett wrote a nice note on twitter thanking the Pens and their fans for his time in Pittsburgh at the end he put "P.S. I didn't break my thumb typing this message!"

At least he has a sense of humor

Bennett seemed like a good kid and certainly showed flashes of high end offensive skill, but just had the worst injury luck. I hope he can reach his potential in NJ, except vs the Pens, of course.

Pens signed a bunch of d-men and Sestito to 2-way contracts plus gave Rutherford a contract extention through 2018-19.

NJ Devils sign Lovejoy to a 3 year deal.

In other news; Eric Staal goes to the Minnesota Wild for a 3yr 10.5 million deal. He took a massive pay cut for a supposedly fresh start

So Fleury and Murray are only 2 goalies back that played last season, correct?  One of them is going to be gone at some point, so no wonder Pens drafted a young goalie.
