Westtown Invitatioinal 2019
« on: November 24, 2019, 08:45:34 PM »

played a 2 sites, Westtown and the new gym at the Phelps School.

this is a showcase tournament, every knows who they play when the show up.

Three games a night at both Westtown and Phelps

This is the Sunday Westtown report.

Game 1 Covenamnt College Prep (N.J.) - Mercersburg

half  C.C.P. 47 - 25

3Q C. C. P. 63 - 35

Final Covenant College Prep 80 Mercersburg 45

Covenant was a old school team to love. Yes they made 6-3's but they relentlessly pounded the ball inside. Their coach was easy to hear across the gym including telling A player 'you don't have to shoot every time you touch the ball'! He sat most if not all of the second half. His wishes were made clear, calling timeouts throughout, even when up big. Four player in double figures, #4,5,20 & 2. Mercersburg's leader was # 2 with 19.

Game 2  Olympus Prep (Grey Team) (N.J.)  - Redemption Christian Academy (N.Y.)

1Q R.C.A. 11 - 7

2Q R.C.A. 31 - 28

3Q Olympus 45 - 40

Final Olympus 58 Redemption Christian 49

Former York High player Clovis Gallon Jr. playing for Olympus. Started and had him with 9 points. Stats unavailable as I was too busy talking! Olympus carries 3 prep teams, Grey, White & Red in addition to a H. S. team. I have no idea of the pecking order.

game 3 Westtown - First Love (Washington Pa.)

1Q Westtown 19 - 12

2Q Westtown 48 - 39

3Q Westtown 61 - 52

Final First Love 71 Westtown 70

Westtown #20 - 15, #24 - 14, #3, #1, #2 all with 12, 11 of 17 3's & 10 of 14 FT.

First Love#14 - 24, #23 - 16, #24- 15 & #2 with 11, an incredible 14 of 18 3's and 9 of 12 FT

Westtown much longer than First Lover. Initially looks like they might not get a shot of inside 15 foot. #24 (Gordon, Penn State bound) did not start but come in and kept them hanging around. Westtown up 10 (66 - 56) with 3 to play. First Love took the lead with about a minute to go. First Love outscoring Westtown 15 - 5 over the last 3 minutes. Looked to be in the bag but dumb offensive foul gave Westtown the ball back with under 4 seconds left under the far basket. Short inbounds pass results in time expiring without a decent shot.

Every point in this game was well earned. #24  for First Love a killer shooter. Westtown played him man up for most of the second half. give him a little space and score it! Play of the game to me was #14 for First Love got inside shot blocked, teammate rebounds, passes to him in the corner in front of us and with one smooth motion hits an all net 3. Wow, basketball on a different level. Coach Pat Chambers (P. S. U.) in the house. Lots of wow moments here today.

This event has to the best underattended event I regularly attend. Gym has only three rows of seats on both sides and a decent amount of baseline seating. Not many here until the last game and then the crown wasn't large.  Good to shoot the breeze with some basketball buddies! Be back next year!

Even with it being so early in the season, the Westtown/First Love matchup was high quality basketball.  Both teams loaded with shooters with players on each team draining 3's from the volleyball line.  Gordon (#14 for First Love) is athletic, has range and knows how to maneuver in traffic at the rim to finish against much taller payers.  He's going to be a nice player at PSU.  When both teams are talented and play well together, makes for a fun basketball game.  The other 2 games also had a lot of talent on the floor.  No matter the score, kids played hard and with discipline, which is a tribute to the coaching and to the players.

A Covenant/Westtown or Covenant/First Love matchup would also be fun to watch.

Yepper's right about this being a great opportunity to see high quality basketball before the start of the PIAA season.  Maybe because it's not part of the PIAA, few know about to draw the interest.

Not a dumb question. The  Prep  leagues in Canada play 10 minute quarters and they use a 30 second shot clock. Henry Carr has also scored 122 & they had a 151-98 win
