Conference Tournament Week
« on: March 10, 2019, 08:54:08 PM »

Fantastic week of college hoops is upon us.  Will be smaller conference championship games each night.  All the mid-majors and big boys will have games starting at 12 noon all over every sports tv networks on Tue, Wed, Thur afternoons until midnight.  Culminating in the Selection Show on Sunday night.

We can use this thread to post about upsets, big games, individual performances, etc during this week.  Then I'll start a new thread Sunday night for the actual March Madness Tourneys (NCAA, NIT, CIT, CBI).

Automatic bids gained this weekend:

Bradley
Gardner-Webb (first berth in school history)
Liberty (28 wins, better team than the average small conference qualifier)
Murray State (POY candidate Ja Morant averages 25 pts, 10 assists)

Southern Conference and Metro Atlantic Conference will punch tickets tonight.  Lots of other conferences have opening round games on TV today/tonight as well.

Iona and Wofford punch their tickets to the big dance.  Wofford may be able to win a game or two in the tourney.

Today starts one of the best weeks in sports IMO. I am happy to be off of work next two days!

With that said this is when I miss the old Big East. That was the best tourney by far!

Pitt blowing out BC.  Panthers were down 9-2 early, but all Pitt since as they are up 53-28 with 14 to go in the game.

St Mary's is going dancing, they knock off Gonzaga for the WCC automatic berth.  Somewhere, a mid-major bubble team just took a kick to the onions.

Agreed! Bummed [a bit] that Pitt is the late game tonight.

Also excited that my Dukes are on NBCSN tomorrow vs. St. Joe's. At a more reasonable time (6pm).

And Nicky, you beat me to the St. Mary's/Gonzaga result!

Syracuse without their best player and leading scorer tonight.  Big chance for Pitt to take advantage maybe...

Pitt 36
Syracuse 30
Half

Pitt has lead throughout thanks to Wilson Frame.  He is on fire from deep as he is 6-9 and has 18 points.

Duke won last night and Zion made his big comeback. I didn't watch the game so I don't know the answer to the big question - Did he wear Nike shoes!

Zion was unbelievable.  As in so good that you have to wonder if last night was a peak.  Hard to believe he can play that good again for 6-8 more games thru the ACC and NCAA Tourneys.

But so glad I watched last night.  Was epic.

As for Duquesne, they always seem the break their fans' hearts. With that said Charlie Brown from St. Joe's is an NBA prospect, something that Duquesne did not have. Also to his credit, the at times Phil Martelli's team was extremely disciplined in regards to turnovers. Good coaching job at least last night.
