pens up 3-2 after 2 periods but Columbus has 1:48 let on their power play to start the third period

Definitely gut check time for the Pens

Huge goal for McCann as he scores his second of the night with 6:20 left in the game. Simon and Schultz get the assists

Pens now up 4-2

Crosby gets an empty net goal and the Penguins will win 5-2. probably the most important game of the season as Washington, Carolina and Montreal were winning big. Pens needed this just to keep pace. Murray made a huge save with around 2 minutes left to keep that 2 goal cushion

Columbus dominated most of this game but only had 21 shots and IMO, they won't be going anywhere with Brobvosky in net

Nice team win for the Pens. McCann acquisition also looking very good.

Thought McQuaid's hit on Rust was really dirty, shoving him into the boards. Plays like those are so dangerous. One of these days, a player is going to wind up with not just a concussion, but a broken neck. Maybe the league needs a black and white rule like for high sticks (doesn't matter how your stick got high enough to hit another player, you have to be in control of it all times) for shoving a player into the boards like that.

Refs swallowed their whistles pretty much through the whole game so Columbus was getting away with a lot of dirty hits. I agree the hit on Rust should've been at minimum an interference call and could've easily been a boarding call like you stated. The Flyers on Saturday and Columbus today have been taking advantage of the non calls from the refs. NHL needs to step up and get on these refs but we know that will never happen

McQuaid really should be suspended. Not only was that from behind, but McQuaid took at least a couple of strides toward Rust, then shoved him. McQuaid was so far away, it didn't look like Rust was even expecting contact. Hits like that are exactly why the NHL now has modified no touch icing.

Nice win but a weird game.

Columbus got the better of the play definitely, and had some really good chances (i.e. the pass pass pass 3 on 0 without getting a SOG) but simply did not generate enough offense and failed to capitalize on some of their grade A chances. Murray was not great although he did have that big save that hs alluded to late (I think on Atkinson) but otherwise was not the difference, either.

Like was mentioned Montreal and Carolina both won so Hurricanes move into Metro 3, Pens into WC2, and CBJ falls all the way from Metro 3 to first team out. Islanders lost their game to Calgary so they are in a 79 point tie in first with Washington, although they have two less losses and two less GP and thus are still in first. Both teams only 5 points ahead of Pittsburgh.

Agree completely and I am surprised Sullivan didnít make more of a stink about it after the game to maybe get the NHL to look at it but as usual, not a word from the NHL

We should here shortly on a status about Rust and Ruhwedel as the Pens are getting ready to take the ice for practice

Rust, Ruhwedel out "longer term". Rust apparently won't need surgery to fix whatever ails him. Ruhwedel has a shoulder injury.

Simon moved up with McCann and Bugjustad. Bluegar likely to be recalled.

I'm assuming we will see Simon up on the top line with Crosby sooner rather than later. I would disagree with that but we all know Crosby prefers Simon over Hornqvist on his line

Sullivan wants to get Hornqvist going and he seems to play best with Crosby, so I don't see a change there.

Columbus beats the Flyers last night in OT so they once again pull 1 point ahead of the Penguins

2 huge games for the Penguins as they will play Buffalo tonight and then Montreal on Saturday. Buffalo for the most part, is out of the playoff race being 8 points behind but we all know how the Pens sometimes play against teams like this. Montreal is a point ahead of the Penguins and with the pens playing back to back with a depleted roster due to injuries, it's gonna take a lot of guts to pull off some wins
