2019 NCAA FBS
« on: January 11, 2019, 07:06:10 AM »

Never too early for news/notes.

QB Kelly Bryant from Clemson is transferring to Missouri.  QB Justin Fields transfers from Georgia to Ohio State.  Which means Ohio State QB-in-waiting Tate Martell is expected to transfer within the week.  Notre Dame QB Brandon Winbush is transferring but hasn't picked a school yet.  Alabama QB Jalen Hurts is also transferring but hasn't selected a school yet.

Michigan DL coach Greg Mattison is the new DC at Ohio State.

Temple finally filled it's head coaching vacancy with NIU's Rod Carey.

Troy coach Neal Brown takes over at West Virginia for Dana Holgorson, who left for Houston.

Notre Dame QB Brandon Winbush transfers to UCF.  Interesting, because the kid who replaced Milton McKenzie played really well the final few games and looked like a long term answer at QB for the Knights.

since Oklahoma got Jalen Hurts earlier today, Austin Kendall, the kid at Oklahoma who would have replaced Kyler Murray, just transferred to WVU and will be eligible immediately

How do you feel about this senior transfer 'rule'?
I like it, letting a player have a bit more to say about his career.  Might keep a few more players staying in college..although it looks like it is mostly QBs making the moves.

I think the senior transfer thing is ok.  When a regular student graduates, he/she can take their show on the road to wherever they want to work on a Master's or post-graduation things.  No reason football players who graduate can't do same thing!

Kelly Bryant left Clemson for Missouri and Missouri just got handed a one year bowl ban this afternoon.  Not good.

FSU tossed starting QB Deandre Francois off the team.  ACC is just mired in drama so far this offseason.  Miami had 9 kids decommit on early signing day, VT had 4 starters enter the transfer portal and leave, and now Francois.

With Sam Ehlinger firmly entrenched as a top tier starting QB after the upset of Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, Texas QB Shane Buechtle will fifth year transfer to SMU to play.

A little bit of noteworthy scheduling news today:  Wisconsin and Alabama sign a deal for a home and home in 2024 and 2025.  Many P5 schools have faced scrutiny for their scheduling practices, but there are some good matchups the next five years of good teams playing other goods teams in opening weeks.

Notre Dame QB Brandon Winbush transfers to UCF.  Interesting, because the kid who replaced Milton McKenzie played really well the final few games and looked like a long term answer at QB for the Knights.

Looks like I posted this back in January, and it's ironic today because yesterday UCF named Winbush their starting QB because Mack broke his ankle (Mack is the kid i mentioned above who replaced Milton).

KK pointed this out in the Pitt thread yesterday, but I think this weakens UCF.  Mack played really really well last year at the end of the season filling in for Milton.  In a way, i guess it's good UCF had somebody fall into their lap with starting experience (Winbush), but he was really bad at times at ND.  Will be interesting if UCF can keep playing at the level they have been the past few years.

My prediction says that Dana Holgorson will steal a recruit or two each year from the B12 big boys, and Houston on a fast track to being the next group of 5 star program.
