Roundball Classic
« on: April 22, 2018, 09:08:03 AM »

While I understand that it is nice to have many different athletes get the chance to play in the Roundball Classic, I think it has become too much.  I would prefer to see just 1 or 2 games with the top overall talent from all classifications.  What do you guys think?

Using the name "Roundball Classic" is a joke compared to the days of the REAL Roundball Classic ..with all these teams, it is more like ....a participation trophy.

it is a joke.

They charge the kids $150 to take part. Friend of mine was bitching about having to pay for his daughter. Apparently he paid(or bitched enough to get the AD to), I see her name on the roster.

with 6 games or whatever it is they have quite the racket going on. I think they get a dinner too but $150?

Nothing like the event I saw as a kid at Civic Arena with Glenn Robinson, Danny Hurley, Michigan's fab 5(all except Jackson). Malik Hightower and another CL player were only locals in big game. Many famous NCAA coaches scouting. Mike Patrick and Dick Vitale called it for ESPN. Both teams put 100+, went down to buzzer and Webber & Howard MVPs. Voshon Lenard(Minnesota), Cory Alexander(Virginia?), James Forrest(GT, famous for ncaa tourney buzzer beater), Orlando Antigua, Kareem Townes(LaSalle, he was terrible in this game despite 40ppg hype).

Hightower won the dunk contest

Maybe the $150 is in the form of an 'ad' to put in the program.  I know back when I was involved in the Big 33 football game, the kids that were selected or the school, etc were ask to buy an a full page "ad" that featured the player. Usually a boster group or even the education association from the school would pay this fee. I know we had other sponsors that would put up the funds for any player that could/did not buy an ad so every player was featured. A package of like ten tickets was given to the player to distribute.  Did they give the girl any freebies?

No, it's a money grab disguised as an all star game.  I mean, there are 6 games...Allen Deep probably pulled in about $5000 profit or so (being conservative here).  He runs all these shootouts during the regular season and makes a pretty penny off them too.

The casinos are happy about his money grabs!

The old Roundball Classic games were the best of the best. The event is bigger, but the play is watered down. They should make it a weekend event. Have games with other players but call it something different and then have the roundball classic like it used to be.

Just my opinion!
