KQV to go off the air Jan 1 2018
« on: December 16, 2017, 07:28:59 AM »

From the PG: http://www.post-gazette.com/local/city/2017/12/15/KQV-radio-going-off-the-air-Dec-31-all-news-format-Robert-W-Dickey-Jr/stories/201712150145

Quote
KQV at 1410 on your AM dial — with a broadcasting history that dates back nearly 100 years, the last 42 of them with a rare all-news format — is preparing to go off the air at year’s end.

Robert W. Dickey Jr., the station manager whose family has owned or co-owned the station since 1982, delivered that news Friday morning to most of his 20 employees gathered in the KQV office at Centre City Tower Downtown.

The station made no immediate on-air announcement and doesn’t plan any until Dec. 31, Mr. Dickey said. He calls the plan a “suspension” of broadcasting, allowing for the possibility some investor or buyer may come along in the interim, though he’s made no active efforts to sell KQV.

In radio broadcasting, station call letters are organized as beginning with "W" east of the Mississippi River and "K" to thw west of it. KDKA and KQV were the only 2 broadcast stations in the east to with call letters beginning with "K". Now there will be only 1.

KQV didn't have a real strong signal. It was difficult to pick up here in Beaver Co, but as a kid I remember listening to it for rock and roll.

It's a shame to see the old independent stations going away that we grew up with.  But, unfortunately it's so tough financially to run them any more.

I might be wrong, but I thought that KQV was owned by the same wealthy family that owned the Tribune and was basically a 'hobby' of the patriarch of the family who did not mind pouring tons of money into the newspaper and radio station.  However, when he died the rest of family decided they wanted to keep most of the money for themselves now, instead of going down a rathole..so to speak.  They got rid of a lot of the newspapers and shut down the Pittsburgh Tribune edition and now KQV holdings.  I guess you can't blame all the heirs wanting to hold on to the money the old man earned and they lived on all their lives. :)

coach99, Scaife did have a hand in saving KQV years ago along with station manager Robert W Dickey. Dickey's family bought Scaife's part and a couple of Dickey, Sr's offspring were running the station until one of them died a couple of months back. Good family.
