WPIAL Football Steering Committee
« on: October 29, 2017, 09:57:36 AM »

Since the WPIAL does not establish its playoff brackets by predetermined "order of finish", how does it handle the situation where a member of its steering committee would be in a position to influence the design of a bracket to benefit its own school district's team? I think I know the answer, but would welcome informed views on the subject.

There have  been many years where members of the Committee are from schools with playoff bound teams.  To my knowledge, there has never been any questions of them influencing where "their" team might be placed.  As a matter of fact, back when it was harder to figure out what team you would be playing and would like some 'inside' information to help you not waste the Monday practice, our representative went out of his way to not give any hint as to our opponent.  It was so funny, that the HC gave the Principal a list of teams we might play and a matching color of a tie he should wear to school on Monday to let us know who to practice for that day :)  He wore a turtle neck to school that day. :)

Generally, the members of the committee who have a team involved are "excluded" from discussion in that class.  For example, CW North Catholic's AD is on the committee.  Therefore, he will spend more time with perhaps the 3A and 4A bracket, but not be involved with the 2A bracket.  At least that is what they "say" they do.

In most sports, football included, the committee members walk into a room and are handed brackets that have already been set.

There is discussion about the merits of moving this team here, or that team there, sometimes enough so that the bracket is re-done.

Usually, those discussions end, and Monday night, they are revealed, many, MANY times, exactly as they were presented to the members at the meeting.

I'm not saying that's right or wrong, just that it IS.

These recent pairing meetings are pretty much a waste of time. Back when there were more teams involved  in the four classes...there was often a question as to which of two or 3 teams you might be paired with.  This led to those arguments of how a coach had to basically waste the entire weekend and Monday practice preparing a game plan for teams you were not going to wind up playing. "Ace" always had some flippant remark to a coach that dared to publicly share his unhappiness. It was almost a yearly tradition that the coach that was sent to the meeting would call back to school to give the staff the news, so they could start breaking down film, etc.  A lot of coaches took personal days on Tuesday after being up all night working on game  plans.  Today, it is pretty cut and dried who you will be playing. You can see just by the bracket postings how it is obvious.

Thanks for the insight guys. There is apparently an element of integrity to it. I still think it is a bit of an odd exercise compared to the way others do it.
