W&J One Win from College World Series Championship
« on: May 29, 2017, 08:54:16 PM »

Matt Heslin allowed just two runs in his longest outing of the season, helping Washington & Jefferson to a 12-2 win over Cal Lutheran in the opening game of the best-of-three finals at the College World Series. The Presidents banged out a dozen hits as four different players drove in runs to win their fourth straight game at the CWS. Kevin Begley went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs. Nick Gatins had three RBI (without a hit) and Ryan Sciullo added a two-run triple as W&J built a 7-0 lead in the fifth inning.

The Kingsmen's only runs against Heslin came in the sixth with a single, double, single and sacrifice fly. The right-hander got a double play to end the inning, another to close the seventh to improve to 5-0, putting the Presidents within one win of their first-ever team national championship.

Game 2 (and Game 3, if necessary) will be played Tuesday. Our coverage on WJPA-AM (1450) and online at WJPA Sports starts at 11:45 am with first pitch at Fox Cities Stadium planned for 12 noon. If Cal Lutheran wins, Game 3 would follow 30 minutes after the conclusion.
