Title: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: hs on March 01, 2019, 03:29:28 PM
Thought I would start a new thread since the last one was up to 25 pages. Didn't know I talked that much about the Pens! LOL

Murray in goal tonight against Buffalo and gives up a bad goal on the first shot he sees from the Sabres. Buffalo up 1-0 early in the first

Luckily about 30 seconds after, Bjugstad ties this game up with a shot off the post. Now 1-1 early

Sabres score on the power play off a very bad call against Wilson. Sheary scored the goal but I'm sorry, that was another very bad goal to give up by Murray. A floater right over his glove. he has made some really good saves but has given up 2 bad goals IMO. Not sure what is wrong with Murray but the Pens can't keep having this happen game in and game out

Sabres will take a 2-1 lead into the locker room but take a penalty with 0.08 seconds left so the Pens will start the second period with a almost full power play

Pens did have 20 shots in that period. Keep shooting and hopefully good things will happen
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: hs on March 01, 2019, 08:39:31 PM
pens have gotten several power play chances this period and have nothing to show for it but they just got a 4 minute double minor on a high stick to Petterman. Pens have to do something on this one

And they do! Schultz scores just a few seconds into the first power play to tie this game up 2-2. Hornqvist might've tipped it in

Pens still have another 2 minute power play to score again
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3

There it is! Crosby scores as he is falling down to give the pens a 3-2 lead. 2 quick power play goals and Crosby gets a goal and an assist. Hornqvist was credited with that 1st power play goal

Crosby also is now tied for 2nd place with Jagr for all time Penguin goals with 439.

another weak shot right over Murray's glove and this game is tied 3-3 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd period. Damnit!

we are going to overtime tied 3-3

Good news is - Pens get a point. Bad news is - They really need to get two points

Montreal also beat the Rangers tonight 4-2 and Washington beat the Islanders 3-1. Carolina is also leading in their game

Pens had every chance in OT but canít score.  Buffalo does even though I have no clue what offsides constitutes in the NHL anymore.
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: hs on March 01, 2019, 09:54:47 PM
Kessel and Malkin were completely gassed and the sabres took advantage as Sheary scores to win this game with 48 seconds left but it was called they are reviewing for offsides

Play was onsides. Good goal. Pens lose 4-3 and only get 1 point. Sabres player was past the line before the puck made it past but the refs deemed he had control of the puck? Probably feels good for Sheary to get 2 goals against his former team but the story tonight IMO was another shaky game from Murray. He made some great saves tonight but also gave up 4 questionable goals IMO.

1 point is not gonna cut it against the teams behind you in the standings

Carolina also wins tonight 5-2 over St Louis so the Penguins drop again in the playoff race

In other NHL news:

Marc Andre Fleury gets his league leading 7th shutout tonight as Vegas blanks the Ducks 3-0. He hit a rough patch the past couple weeks as he gave up 24 goals in 6 games but has come back nicely and has won his last 2 games

He is also now only 3 wins away from passing Jacques Plante (whoever that was. LOL) for 8th in all time wins

Columbus gets blanked today by Edmonton 4-0. Pens are in a must win spot tonight as they take on Montreal as Columbus is still tied with the Penguins at 75 points and Montreal is 2 points ahead. Carolina is also 1 point ahead at 76 points and they are on a 4 game winning streak

pens gotta suck it up tonight and get 2 points!!!

Murray is in net again tonight. Kinda shocking with how he played last night but maybe Sullivan is trying to show some confidence in him for the playoff push?

Wow! 21 seconds in and Crosby scores on the redirection to male it 1-0 Penguins. Pens force a turnover and they take advantage of it

Crosby is also now in 2nd place all alone with 440 goals all time in Pens history passing Jagr. of course Lemieux is on top with 690 goals
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: hs on March 02, 2019, 07:28:05 PM
pens take advantage of a horrible penalty call by the refs as Malkin scores on the powerplay to male it 2-0 Pens. Crosby gets another point with an assist on that goal.

Getting in Price's head early is good for the Pens. That was a bad goal he gave up IMO. Keep shooting Penguins!

Price is not looking good so far in this gam. Guentzel scores right off the faceoff and gives the pens a 3-0 lead and only 9 minutes into the first period. Guentzel gets his 30th of the season and Crosby gets another assist

He has also played the most games this season at 55 in net and has the most wins at 31. I hope Vegas doesn't burn him out before the playoffs

pens only with 4 shots on goal that period but wind up with 3 goals to lead 3-0 after the 1st. Would love to see some more shots on net but the Pens defense is looking really good tonight, sticks are active and Murray is looking much sharper so far than he did last night.

I just hope the Pens can keep this up for another 40 minutes and not burn out
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3

And it didn't take long for Hornqvist to be moved off that top line and it wasn't Simon that replaced him, it was McCann.

How about 4-0 Penguins. Guentzel with his 31st goal of the season and Crosby with another assist.

Don't look now but Crosby is in the top 4 for points this season

Montreal just got the next goal so this game isn't over yet. Pens still up 4-1
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: hs on March 02, 2019, 08:51:57 PM
Pens with a 3 goal lead as they are up 4-1 after 2 periods. Price stopped 2 breakaways from Guentzel and ZAR to keep the Canadians in striking distance in this game.

20 more minutes Penguins! No OT tonight. Win this in regulation!

Carolina wins in OT to stay hot and ahead of the Penguins

Pens beat Montreal 5-1 as all 4 lines and the goalie was tough tonight. Pens needed those 2 points bad and also needed to keep Montreal from getting any points. Murray was really good tonight. Glad to see him bounce back and have a great game after a stinker against Buffalo

Hopefully we get some good news on injuries to Letang, Dumoulin, Ruhwhedel and Rust before Tuesday against the Panthers
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3

Big time win and really the Pens get 6 out of a possible 8 points on this 4 game road trip.  It should have been 8 of 8, but anyone would have signed up for 6.  Best part is the 2 wins were over teams directly in their path.  Flyers and Sabreís are behind them and only gained 1 point.

Hopefully this scoring binge continues.  Still would love to see Kessel get one to get him going, but not much else to complain about tonight.

Nice win by the Pens. The forwards were really coming back to help the defense and the d-men played under control with no crazy pinches although Petterson has made some really bad decisions passing the puck the past couple of games. He's a bit over his head playing top 4 minutes. Kudos to Jack Johnson who appears to have stepped up his game in light of all the injuries.

I wondered why Bugjustad was centering the 3rd line and where was McCann until I figured out he was playing wing with Crosby. Both centers look out of place at wing, but one has to play there for the time being.

Loved seeing Gudbranson level Gallagher with a check, then Gallagher try to challenge him to a fight. I think that took Gallagher right off his pesky game from then on.

I liked Gudbranson's game also. Would really like to see him stay in the lineup when Dumoulin and Letang come back. He might be our answer for when Columbus and the Capitals start doing their shenanigans but I don't know where he will fit. Maybe Petterson out and Gudbranson in when people start getting healthy?

Caps win in an unusual way today as they beat the Rangers 3-2 in a shootout. Ovechkin gets credited with a shootout goal in the 4th round without even putting the puck in the net because the rangers goalie Georgiev threw his stick at the puck. Ovie was credited with a goal on a review

In other NHL news:

The Flyers continue to stay hot and knock the Islanders out of first place beating them 4-1. Washington jumps to first with their shootout win today. Flyers are only 5 points out of a playoff spot

And Fleury gets another shutout today beating the Vancouver Canucks 3-0. That's also his league leading 32nd win and 8th shutout of the season

The Pacific is an absolute shit show.  Twice as many teams under .500 as any other division.  No reflection on Flower, not even talking about him.  Just saying that Vegas was dropped into the absolute easiest division in hockey.  Couldn't hand pick a better situation for an expansion team.  Can't imagine they'd have had the success they've had so far thru their first season and a half anywhere except the Pacific.

I think it's great.  I love the city of Vegas.  I'm glad the Raiders are going there too.  I think they should have a team in every major sport.  And I think it's awesome that Vegas is hosting both the MWC and Pac-12 hoops tournaments in 10 days.  What a great weekend that would be to be there.

True but Vegas does have to compete in their division against arguably the 2 best teams in the West - Calgary and San Jose

A few big games tonight regarding the standings in what could be a big week towards determining the playoff fate of the Penguins.

Pens of course host Florida.
Montreal heads out West to take on the Kings in LA.
CBJ is at New Jersey.
The Islanders host the Sens at Nassau Coliseum.

Of course a big home and home between the Jackets and Pens Thursday and Saturday nights.

Going to the games tonight and Thursday. Looking forward to them both and praying for 4 points for the Penguins

Dumoulin practiced today with a no contact jersey.

Malkin 4 points away from 1,000 for his career. Crosby at 1,199 points just 2 points away from passing Dino Ciccarelli for 47th on the all time NHL points list

I should get to see both Columbus games. Thursday night is on NBCSN and Saturday night I believe is on Fox Sports Ohio. Will listen to tonight's game online. We are just over 3 weeks away from my wife's due date so no trips to Columbus for me this March haha.

Pathetic first period from the Penguins as they are down 1-0. Pens are back to trying those stupid long cross ice passes and behind the back passes that Florida is picking off every time. Luongo is not good this season. Shoot the puck on him and heíll let some in!

Looked like Hornqvist mightíve broke his hand or wrist as he took a puck off a slap shot. He dropped his stick and went straight to the locker room but he is back on the ice to start the second period

Very true! It seems like when we get to overtime, bad things happen a lot. Crosby and Guentzel are awesome together and McCann has fit in nicely on that top line. I still say the Pens played down to their competition tonight and it almost went the wrong way

Carolina loses in OT but still get a point. Columbus wins in a shootout and is still two points behind the Pens. Huge games coming up Thursday and Saturday against the Blue Jackets

I guess Trotman got the start over Riikola because he's a RH D, but him and Petterson made kind of a scary D pair out there.

In other NHL news:

Fleury made 33 saves for his 437th NHL win and tied Jacques Plante for eighth on the all-time wins list in beating Calgary 3-1. Terry Sawchuk is seventh with 445 victories. Fleury might be able to get 446 wins but it will be tough

Washington also beat the Flyers 5-3 and took sole possession of first place in the Metro with 85 points. Flyers are at 72 points, 7 points out of the 2nd wild card spot.

Huge game as the Pens are taking the ice t take on the Columbus Blue Jackets. Would love to see the Pens take at least 3 out of 4 points on this home at home vs Columbus. That will really put a hurtin' on Columbus's chances to make the playoffs

Murray has to be on today and Malkin, pleeeaaassse don't take any stupid offensive zone penalties!

Kessel gets off the snide and scores on an early power play goal to give the Pens a 1-0 lead

Columbus is challenging though for goalie interference. Hornqvist touched the goalie with his stick on his back. You just never know what the refs will call

Nope. Good goal! Kessel gets it. Malkin and Hornqvist with the assists.

pens have a 1-0 lead after one period but the Blue Jackets will have a fresh sheet of ice for their power play to start the second period. Pens got the lone goal but Columbus dominated most of the period but the Penguins were in block shot mode and were trying to stop everything from getting to the net
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: hs on March 07, 2019, 08:39:14 PM
This is as close to a playoff game as you can get with all the blocked shots and the refs have swallowed their whistles and are not calling any obvious penalties. Guentzel was just obviously boarded and no call. Columbus gets 2  power plays on some really bad penalty calls IMO. Luckily, they did not score

pens get a 5 on 3 as Blueger takes an elbow to the face and then Crosby takes a stick to the face and they call a double minor on that one. Crosby not on the power play though as he goes to the locker room.

Pens win this game 3-0. Good news is the Pens get the 2 points and better news is they stop Columbus from getting any points. Murray didn't have to be great but he was still very, very good as he gets his 10th shutout of his career.

A lot of nastiness in this game as it should set up a dirty game on Saturday between these two. Reports earlier said Letang might be ready to go by Saturday. I would personally hold him out 1 extra game because I think Columbus will try to take some liberties on their home ice

Montreal loses to the Sharks 5-2 so them and Carolina are both in the wild card spots with 79 points.

Islanders also win so they are now tied with Washington atop the Metro with 85 points

Columbus right now is on the outside looking in with 77 points

Don't look now but Crosby is in 4th place on the NHL scoring list with 87 points, 7 points behind McDavid in 3rd

Pens down 1-0 after one period. Pens had their opportunities but just couldnít cash in. After giving up the first goal, Murray made some huge saves to keep it at 1-0. Columbus still has 1:15 left on their power play to start the second period

Pens get to take on the red hot Bruins tonight who came back to win yesterday and have secured points in 19 straight games. Gonna be tought for the Penguins to get a win tonight

Marc Andre Fleury and the Golden Knights win last night which gives Fleury his 438th career win and moves to 8th on the all time list. next is Terry Sawchuck at #7 with 445 wins. Lundqvist is at #6 with 449 wins. Congrats Fleury and the Knight are starting to play some good hockey

Columbus played an excellent game last night. It kind of had that "season on the line" feel to it and they responded. It would have been nice to swing the race even more, but give CBJ credit where due. Ironically I believe that CBJ has Boston next also. They are in a difficult stretch of games.

I agree but I can't let Kessel off the hook. That was an egregious turnover where he basically tripped over his own feet. If it was any bottom 6 player or defender that did that, they would be benched for the rest of the game. I also hate that Sullivan put Simon back on the top line. Since he has done that, they have gone cold. Hornqvist or even McCann need to go back up there IMO

Sweet shorthanded goal from McCann gives the Pens a 2-0 lead. It will be huge if the Pens can keep this top 2 power play in the League off the scoresheet

Great period from the Pens as they are up 2-0. Only bad thing is they have to stop taking so many penalties against this good power play team. Bruins will start the second with 1:27 left on their power play
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3

I told you so! Pens take two more quick penalties and the Bruins score on the second one to make this game 2-1 Penguins. Boston has been on the power play pretty much this whole period so far as they have seven shots on goal to the Penguins zero!

How was a penalty shot not called on that one? Blueger was tripped going to the net all alone and couldnít get a shot off. Pens get a power play but it has not been good tonight

Pens almost give up a shorthanded goal but pens are able to come back and Guentzel scores off a nice pass from Crosby. Penguins only have 5 shots this period but are able to go up 3-1

That should be game! McCann get his second into the empty net and yup, the Penguins win 4-2! Great win for the Penguins. Loved the play in the first and third periods but the second period was very sloppy for the Pens. Murray played in his eighth straight game and was really good

I still like McCann a lot more on that top line versus Simon but we will see what Sullivan does on Tuesday when the Pens take on the Capitals

Jared McCann is a really nice, young player. I like him better at center, but he's fit in very well with Crosby. The only nitpick is that he and Guentzel are both LWs, but Guentzel doesn't seem all that bothered by having to play RW.
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3

I also find it funny how Sullivan keeps messing with that top line. it seems like you have one bad shift and you are off that line but Malkin and Kessel have been bad for weeks but that second line continues to stay together. I thought he found a good fit when he put McCann with Crosby a week or so ago but all of a sudden, there's Simon again! Crosby was on a hot streak for quite a few games then when Simon goes back to the top line he goes cold again.

Only 13 games left. Let's see if he can stick with some lines for a few of them
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: bfgrad on March 11, 2019, 08:51:56 AM
I don't mind Simon, but I think he's miscast as a top 6 forward. I think his best position is probably 3rd or 4th line center, but Pens are loaded with natural centers at the moment. I only wish Sprong had gotten the same leeway and patience from Sullivan.

If I were setting lines right now, I'd have Crosby, Malkin, McCann and Cullen at center. Then Crosby/Guentzel/Bugjustad, Malkin/Hornqvist/Blueger, McCann/Kessel/Simon, Cullen/Wilson/ZAR.

Capitals and Penguins will meet in an hour for the last time this season and an interesting fact that I heard on Mark Madden's show is that the winner of the last meeting of the year has gone on to win the Stanley Cup.

Washington on a 7 game winning streak and the Penguins have gotten points in 7 of their last 8 games. A lot of the media is focusing on what the Penguins might do to Tom Wilson as this is his first game back in PGH since he broke ZAR's jaw. IMO, just win the game in regulation and get the two points. That's the only revenge the Pens need to dish out

Some other big games tonight are the Blue Jackets taking on the Bruins and Montreal versus Detroit.

Bad goal given up by Murray as it goes right over his glove, no body in front of him screening the goalie with 30 seconds left in the period to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead

Hopefully history repeats itself as the first team to score in these games have lost all of them

Crosby with a terrible turnover at the blue line before the goal. Instead of making the smart shoot in, he tried to make a play while surrounded by 3 Caps. A shoot in probably leaves no time for Wash to skate up ice.

Pens all of a sudden flip a switch and wake up. First the Caps score a fluky goal to make it 2-0 but the Pens come back and score 2 goals in 47 seconds. Crosby and Guentzel score to tie this game up 2-2

Nice! Crosby with a power play goal to give the pens the lead 3-2. Nice goal from Crosby off a nice feed from Kessel. I'm not sure but Crosby might've gotten an assist on that first goal also

Perfect place at the perfect time as the rebound goes right to Kessel and he puts it in for the power play goal. Pens take the lead 4-2 and Malkin with 2 assists gets his 1,000th point of his career. Congrats Geno!

That's game! Pens end the capitals 7 game winning streak with a 5-3 win! But in all honesty, Pens were lucky to get a win in this game. That 3 goal surge in the second period won it for the Pens. Pens power play was not good to start and I can't even count how many posts the Caps hit and how many wide open nets they whiffed on. And IMO, yes Crosby had 2 goals but I did not like his game tonight. As Bfgrad stated earlier, his passing was god awful today. Constantly turning the puck over. But as they say - a win is a win is a win

pens are able to keep that tiny points cushion as the Blue Jackets win tonight 7-4 over the bruins and Montreal is leading over the Red Wings

Not going to complain about a hard fought win. Yeah, Caps hit a few posts, but sometimes that's the way it goes. Pens had a few losses this year when the same thing happened.

I hated last year's trades and the ones earlier this season, but Rutherford did a good job correcting his mistakes (maybe Craig Patrick helped, too). Finding a match with FLA to move Brassard and Sheahan and get McCann and Bugjustad has worked out really well. McCann has been a revelation. He made a great play taking the puck off Kuznetsov to find Guentzel for the 1st goal and ignite the rally. Pettersen has gotten better and better on defense. Gudbranson has been good as well. He sure kept Wilson in check tonight. I think I like the composition of the team right now and that they have a legit chance at another Cup if Murray stays steady.

I am really starting to wonder what the Pens will do with Letang when his contract is up I think in a season or two. Letang is having one of his best seasons but IMO, he just is not worth the money the Pens are paying him. I'm really liking the play of our defense right now (Yes, even Johnson). I think his contact money can be spread around to keep some of the players we already have unless Letang will be willing to take a huge paycut but I doubt it.

Pens will have to figure out what to do with Schultz first. He's a UFA after next season. The problem Letang brings is that Sullivan overuses him when he plays. Less of Letang is more, but Sullivan can't seem to resist the temptation to play him a lot. When Letang's not there, the workload and minutes are spread out more evenly and the defense plays better overall.

If/when they see Washington again they will need to do a much better job vs. Ovechkin. He had 4-5 grade A chances last night...he will usually score on probably 75% of those. The game could have easily have been a 2 goal Capitals win.

With that said any win over the Caps is a good win.

And while Crosby has a half dozen highlight reel goals as usual, his Larry Murphy pass to spring Sid free last night is the Penguins play of the year IMO given the skill involved, the teamwork involved, and the opponent/time of the year.

Looks like DeSmith will be starting tonight as he was the first off the ice at practice. Letang and Maatta also practiced and Rust had on a no contact jersey. ZAR is out "longer term" and Sullivan said he hopes he can come back before the season is over.

Hope Pens bring their A game tonight. Buffalo is not playing good but we all know how sometimes the Pens take their foot off the gas when they play teams like this

Pens avoid the dreaded trap game and beat the Sabres 5-0 last night. 3 goals in the second period and goals from Bjugstad and Guentzel in the 3rd sealed the win. DeSmith played great in his first start in almost weeks and earned his 3rd shutout of the season

Pens have back to backs this weekend starting with the dreaded Saturday afternoon game at 1:00 against the Blues and Sunday night against the Flyers. Both teams are scratching and clawing for a playoff spot so this won't be an easy weekend.

I like the way this team is playing right now and it honestly concerns me on what Sullivan will do when Letang, Maatta an Rust are ready to come back. I'm hoping it doesn't throw a monkey wrench in the way this team is gelling right now at the right time

also keeping an eye on that Crosby has a chance to get 100 points for the season. He is at 92 points now and needs 8 more points in 11 games. He also has 33 goals and it's not out of reach for him to get 7 goals and get to 40 for the season. I also think he has a slim chance to be voted MVP but I'm sure Kucherov and Kane will be favorites over Crosby

Not Penguins but Fleury is at 34 wins and the way Vegas is playing him, he has a chance to get to 40 wins for the season

I am still hoping and praying for a Vegas vs Penguins Stanley Cup Final!!!
Title: Re: Pens 2018-2019 Regular Season Part 3
Post by: bfgrad on March 15, 2019, 02:50:42 PM
I don't honestly think Maatta will be back this season given his history of shoulder injuries and surgery. Letang will be an upgrade over Trotman, but Sullivan will have to curb his impulse to overuse him. Like in the 2016 Cup run, the defense played much better when responsibility and minutes were spread out evenly.

With ZAR out indefinitely, Rust has a spot as he's better than Blandisi and Simon and a natural winger as opposed to Bluegar who is a bit out of place.

Rutherford's trades were clunkers last year, but he corrected that this year getting Bugjustad, McCann, Pettersen and Gudbranson. Gudbranson especially has looked like a different player than what the scouting reports implied.

Penguins had 2 power play opportunities and nothing to show for them. St. Louis is skating circles around them right now. Not even a fun game to watch as the Penguins were outmatched in every aspect of this game. Pens down 5-1 with 3 minutes left. Only good news so far is the Islanders lose to the Red Wings today 2-1. Blues were much more aggressive today and the Penguins had no idea how to handle it. Kessel for some reason looked lost on the power play like he was too timid to shoot for some reason.

Big let down today so we will see how the Penguins come back to play the Flyers who will be desperate for a win.

Columbus, Montreal, Islanders and Washington all lose yesterday which at least means the Penguins don't lose any ground in the standings

Carolina wins last night 4-2 so they move to the first wild card spot with 85 points, Columbus in the 2nd WC spot with 84 points and as KR said, Montreal is on the outside looking in with 81 points

In the West, Arizona lost last night in OT 3-2 to Edmonton as they are clinging to the last playoff spot and I would think if they get into the playoffs, Tocchet has a good shot to win the Jack Adams trophy for coach of the year. I pretty much think it is a 2 man race between Trotz and Tocchet

Flyers score on the power play but it is immediately waived off by the refs for goaltender interference but the Flyers are challenging. Pens also think the Flyers were offsides so if this goal is called a goal, the Pens are ready to challenge

Refs say good goal and now the Pens are challenging for offsides. This is crazy right now. Was definitely offsides but we will see

Refs call no goal due to offsides. Flyers still have 1:38 of power play time

Very disappointing weekend for the Pens as they only get 1 point out of a possible 4 and yes, I agree with KR, that game against Philly was absolute crap. I just had that feeling that the Flyers were going to win that game when the Penguins just couldn't beat their goalie one more time but of course, stupid Penguins fans decided to chant 16,000 to the Flyers because it has been 16,000 days since they have won the Cup but the Flyers were able to embarrass the Pens again as they did in the outdoor game but that didn't stop Pens fans from making asses of themselves

Just went on the Vegas website and nothing about Fleury being injured but he must be because they recalled their Minors goalie Maxime Lagace on an "emergency basis"

I really hope it wasn't another concussion

Just found it: Lower body injury they are calling it

Great! Here we go again! Pens were up up 2-1 with 2 minutes left and Murray canít catch a weak shot that goes right in his glove and the rebound gets put in and this game is tied 2-2 and now JohNson takes a penalty so the Canes are on the power play for the rest of the game !

Hopefully the Pens can get this to OT and salvage a point

Amazing effort in OT killing the penalties, but nobody can score in the shootout for the Pens as they lose 1-0 there and 3-2 overall.

I mean any kind of points are good, but would be nice to win some of these games in OT.

Just hate the Pens' shooters shootout strategy. They are way too slow and too much dipsy-doodling. This is the way most teams do it, but I think going in fast and getting off a hard snipe would work better.

It is getting to be a common thread where I read or listen to on the radio when someone talks about the Penguins they say or write Murray played really good BUT. And when that but gets thrown in there that usually means he gives up a bad goal to either tie or lose the game. I wasn't happy with either of the goals he gave up yesterday. 2nd goal was flat out bad because he has always had issues with controlling the puck when it goes in his glove. Looks like a kid playing baseball for the first time and a pop fly was hit to him. First goal maybe he gets a pass because Carolina had good center drive coming down the ice so he really couldn't square up to the shooter but IMO, he just always keeps his glove and blocker down way too low and it is easy for good shooters to snipe high on him.

I just have no confidence in this team right now to close out a game that is close and the power play has looked flat out awful lately. Maybe it will get better in the playoffs when teams try to block everything going to the net but we will see. Good note is the penalty kill has looked really good for a while now. Johnson has really cemented his place there and saved that game in OT last night to at least get it the shoot out by blocking that shot late in OT with his skate that was going to a wide open net

Columbus loses 4-2 to the Flames
Islanders lose 5-0 to the Bruins
Capitals beat the Devils 4-2
Montreal wins 3-1 over the Flyers

So Carolina in the 1st Wild card spot with 87 points, Columbus holding on to the 2nd Wild card spot with 84 points but Montreal is only 1 point behind. Flyers 5 points back with 9 games to play. Penguins with 89 points are 2 points behind the Islanders for 2nd place in the Metro. Washington on top of the Metro with 93 points

Have to disagree here. The Pens are a good, but not great, team. At the start of the season, the mgt spent far too much time trying to accomodate Brassard and I think that contributed to their slow start. I think the subsequent trades have created a much better team, one that I think can make a run at another championship.

Right now the playoff spots are as close as fuzz on tick's ear, opponents who are fighting for a playoff spot or playoff positioning are playing like it's game 7. Not having Malkin means opponents can concentrate their best d-men and forwards on Crosby's line and it shows on the PP and lack of secondary scoring.

I agree with this and I believe this team just needs Murray to steal a game for them and he just hasn't been able to do that lately. Sure, there have been some defensive breakdowns in front of him, odd man breaks etc. but every once in a while your goalie has to make that save. I may be missing 1 or two games but the last time I felt Murray was just unstoppable and flat out won a game for the Pens was when they went into Toronto and shut them out

Washington was able to get Tampa Bay to OT last night and get a point but wound up losing 5-4 so the Capitals sit atop the Metro with 94 points. Islanders in second with 91 and the Penguins in 3rd with 87 points

Hopefully the Pens are ready to play tonight against the Predators. That arena in Nashville will be rockin'

The Penguins need to play significantly better on defense from the goalie out, first line to fourth line.
They're just not that good, or haven't played as if they are for two years now.

The Penguins need to play significantly better on offense.
One goal a game for a week, then 5 goals a game for 3-4, then one goal a game down the stretch doesn't cut it.
They're just not that good, or haven't played as if they are for two years now.

I realize that defense wins championships, but for me I worry more about the Pens when they are not scoring goals. Defense can be taught and executed, and I have no problem with them choosing to "flip a switch" as they chose to in 2015 and in 2016. Also, with them, good offense seems to breathe more life into their defense and MM, who both seem to play better when their offense is doing their thing.

No need to trap or completely change their approach, but they do need to find some ways to maximize their offensive potential.

Penguins can't get out of own zone and the Preds tie the game with 3 minutes to play....a greatly familiar theme...

Murray stones the Preds in shootout, Crosby scores the only S/O goal and the Pens get 2 points!

Two points is two points, but the Pens need to figure out how to produce more offense. Their defense has been pretty good, defensemen are playing within themselves and the forwards are doing a good job backchecking and disrupting opponents' offenses.

I honestly think this is what it is going to be until Malkin comes back. the 3rd and 4th lines have been sporadic in offensive production all year and if other teams can focus on Crosby's line, we are gonna get a goal or two from our top line and that seems to be it. Hornqvist is absolutely snake bit right now and not getting any breaks. Hit a post last night and Crosby set him up right in front and the puck just slid of his stick. Hopefully he can turn it around because that long term deal he got looks to be pretty bad right now

And the theme of the game once again is - Murray played a really good game BUT - That goal he gave up late in the 3rd was bad. If he was tight against the post it would've been a save but if it is not his glove, it is those bad angle shots against the post are his bug a boo. IMO, I think he believes there is no way someone can shoot it on net that close to the post from there so he cheats a little to the center to cut it off in case it is passed to the center and it is abled to be snuck in between him and the post. Just my opinion though

With all that said, really happy with a win last night. Good to see the Penguins go into a hostile environment and get the two points. They had to be shaking in their boots after letting Nashville tie it up late. Here we go again had to be going through everyone's head. I really like the way Johnson is playing right now. Him and Schultz have been a great defensive pair and Johnson is sneaky strong and can put on some good clean hits every now and again

To reiterate what was said earlier:

Carolina loses 6-3 to Tampa
Montreal blanks the Islanders 4-0
Philadelphia is still alive a they beat Chicago 3-1
Columbus loses to Edmonton 4-1

So all that means Pittsburgh is tied with the Islanders with 91 points but is still in 3rd. Washington on top of the Metro with 94 points
Montreal pulls into the 2nd wild card spot with 85 points. Columbus out with 84 points and the Flyers have 80 points

Penguins have 7 games left and everyone else has 8 games left except Carolina who has 9. It's gonna be an awesome 2 weeks of regular season hockey!

Thought for sure when Rust took that holding penalty that Dallas was going to tie it when they pulled their goalie but the Pens hunkered down, Murray made some good saves and the Penguins were able to win a game in regulation.

Very nice win for the Pens as they are able to keep pace with the Islanders at 93 points. Washington plays Philly today so we will see either the Flyers put pretty much the last nail in their coffin for their playoff chances if they lose or the Metro might still be up for grabs if the Capitals lose.

Islanders beat the Coyotes 2-0

Islanders (95 points) are now 1 point behind the Capitals (96 points) for the Metro lead. Penguins have 93 points and play the lowly Rangers tonight and that is scary to me that the Penguins are playing a team that is out of it. Hope they can get up for the game.

As KR said earlier, Carolina is only 2 points behind the Penguins at 91 points and Montreal is in the second WC spot with 88 points. Columbus with that win is 2 points out of a playoff spot with 86 points and the Flyers are at 80 with 6 games to play

I agree with you bfgrad, I was not happy that the Penguins sleepwalked through the first 10 minutes of that game but I would have to assume Sullivan went into the locker room during the first period intermission and chewed them all a new a$$ and they came out and dominated the rest of the game. Murray was really good also and was able to keep the Pens in the game until they started to score

Also surprised to see during this nice road trip that Crosby only has 1 or 2 points and that means other players are picking up the scoring slack while other teams are putting their top defenders on Crosby to try and stop him

I was really hoping to see Crosby get to that 100 point milestone this season. Still possible but with 94 points and 5 games left that could possibly be a long shot. Also would've liked to see him get to 40 goals but no goals in 7 games probably killed that idea. He has been stuck at 33 goals for a while now. Bjugstad got a very late goal but the Pens wind up losing 3-1 last night.

I agree KR, Rinne was due. it looked like the Pens threw everything they had at him in that first period and got a little deflated when nothing got past him.

Power play has looked awful. Being without Malkin and Letang doesn't help but Kessel just looks horrible. And we all know Sullivan won't sit him because god forbid Kessel loses his games played streak. IMO, he definitely needs moved in the offseason even if he has a great showing in the playoffs

Pens can't be comfortable yet as all the teams that they would have wanted to lose, won last night

Carolina beats Philly 5-2
Washington beats Tampa Bay 6-3
Islanders beat Buffalo 5-1
Montreal beats the Jets 3-1
Columbus beats Nashville 5-2

So now it looks like Washington has the Metro top spot locked up with 102 points, Islanders in second with 99 and the Pens in third with 95 points
Carolina only 2 points behind the Penguins with 93 points and in the 1st Wild Card spot. Columbus and Montreal are tied with 92 points but Columbus gets the 2nd WC spot.
Pens are looking at a must win this afternoon, IMO, against Carolina or they may be looking at dropping into a wild card spot this week. Pens offense needs to wake up today

I'm not putting it into "must win" especially when keeping perspective of the larger prize as well as the quality of their remaining schedule (after this they play games all vs the bottom of the standings) but it would be a nice statement win of sorts.

All I know is that if the Penguins lose today then Carolina is tied with them with 95 points. Pittsburgh has 2 left with Detroit and 1 with the Rangers. Carolina has the Maple Leafs, Devils and Flyers. Columbus has the Sabres, Bruins, Rangers and Senators. All three teams don't have that hard of remaining games especially if teams like Toronto and Bruins start resting players and we all know Pens tend to slip against those bottom feeding teams

IMO, Pens need to bring their A game today

Power play needs to be better today. Fingers crossed

Malkin and Letang still out. Maatta paired with Dumoulin and Murray is in net.

Lets Go Pens!

Penguins score first and score early as Wilson keeps poking at the puck and gets it in but Carolina is challenging saying his blocker was pushed in the net

I don't think so but you never know what the refs will say

Good goal. Pens up 1-0 in the first period. Nice!

Great win for the Penguins as they get their scoring from the 3rd and 4th lines today and they defeat Carolina 3-1. Pull 4 points ahead of Carolina in the standings and still have an outside shot at first place in the Metro. Very, very slim but still a shot

Blue Jackets beat the Sabres last night 4-0 so they now pull one point ahead of the Hurricanes for the #1 WC spot with 94 points

Penguins are 3rd in the Metro with 97 points and technically, with less than a week left, still have not secured a playoff spot.

Montreal right now is on the outside looking in with 92 points. Everyone beneath them has been eliminated

At this point the only way the Pens don't make the playoffs is if they lose out and Montreal wins out while Columbus wins 2 and Carolina gets 5 points.

Toronto beats the Islanders and Florida beats Washington so nobody above the Pens in the Metro gain any points tonight!

Detroit and Pittsburgh swap power play goals as they will head into the first period intermission tied 1-1

Hopefully the Penguins prove me wrong but this game has me worried. Pens are dealing with a lot of injuries right now and Detroit is on a 5 game winning streak. Penguins will though secure a playoff spot with a win tonight or a Montreal loss

Pens once again sucked into playing a completely undisciplined pond hockey game although that 2 on 1 goal by Kessel from Sid was beautiful.

Agreed. Pens outshot the Red Wings 39-26 but could only muster one goal. I said about a week ago I was not too confident with this team playing these cellar dwellers the last week of the season and they wind up losing to Detroit 4-1. Detroit's top line scored all 4 goals. Maybe you can say it was because Dumoulin and Letang, the Pens top defensive pair, were out but I will go with bfgrad and say they just played undisciplined hockey and just did not look good last night.

Pens still have not secured a playoff spot and are sitting at 97 points. Blue Jackets lost last night but Carolina and Montreal won so Carolina sits in the top WC spot with 95 points and Columbus and Montreal are tied with 94 for the 2nd WC spot.

Looks like Malkin will be ready for the game tonight against Detroit. Letang is still practicing with a no contact jersey but was practicing on the top power play. He has come back before taking a full contact practice so he might be ready to come back tonight also. Not sure how they get away with that though. I would've thought that taking a practice with contact should be a requirement before coming back to play but if it has been done before, we will see

In terms of score board watching tonight Islanders are at Florida. Currently 0-0 1st period but Isles outshooting Panthers 16-2 so far! An Isles win clinches them home ice in round 1.

Another interesting game tonight is Habs/Caps. On one hand, if Montreal loses Pens are in the playoffs regardless of these last two. On the other, a Washington regulation loss and an Islanders win keeps the Isles alive for a division title game Sunday between the two.

Penguins up 3-1 late in the 2nd period with 2 goals from Kessel and one from Guentzel. Pens look like they want to win this game and that is refreshing to see. Crosby has 2 assists and Malkin with one

Really liking the intensity Iím seeing from the Pens right now

Crosby with a power play goal to make it 4-1 Penguins. Kessel and Hornqvist with the assists.

Good to see Kessel and Crosby getting out of their funks with both having 3 point nights so far

penguins get the win over Detroit 4-1 and have secured a playoff spot for the 13th straight year. Good to see players like Crosby, Guentzel, Kessel and Hornqvist getting points again and good to see the team getting healthier. Murray looked good toady and glad to see he wasn't giving up those huge rebounds. Team just might be switching that gear for the playoffs. Let's see how they do on Saturday though because it would be nice to see the Penguins stay in that 3rd spot or even get to 2nd in the Metro because:

Islanders won 2-1
Washington beat Montreal 2-1
Carolina won 3-1

Washington ins the Metro with 104 points, Islanders in second with 101 points, Penguins have 99 points and I think they hold the tiebreaker if them and NY finish with 101. Would also not like to see the Pens slip to the top WC spot because Carolina is right behind them with 97 points. Columbus and Montreal are battling for that last playoff spot tied with 94 points

Good win by the Pens against a team playing loose with nothing to lose or gain. Murray's save on the breakaway turned around the game, imo. Kessel looked rejuvenated after his two goals. Crosby is only a couple points away from a 100 pt season. Now that Malkin is back, that should give Sid more room to operate. Guentzel also just needs 1 more goal for 40.

NHL tiebreaker changed a few years ago to regulation wins. As of tonight:

Pens have 37 regulation wins, 5 OT wins, 2 SO wins, 3 SO losses, 8 OT losses
NYI have 36 regulation wins, 6 OT wins, 5 SO wins, 5 SO losses, 2 OT losses.

https://standings.hockey/2019/Metropolitan

NYI beat FL 2-1 in a shootout and have 101 pts with 1 game left. They finish at Wash on Sat with no chance of finishing 1st. Caps have no chance to improve their standing in the overall playoffs.

Pens finish at home vs NYR. To finish 2nd, they must win in regulation and NYI must lose in regulation.

CBJ wins in a SO to go up 2 points on MTL for the final playoff spot.  A Habs loss or CBJ getting to OT will clinch a playoff spot for them.

Now I seeing that CBJ clinched so all 16 teams are set before the final day.  Just seeding position and division titles to be decided.

I'm actually happier to see Columbus make the playoffs. They typically choke but we will see

Rangers got Columbus to a shootout so I'm sure they will also try to try and  ruin the Pens 2nd place in the Metro hopes

Because of seeding I was actually hoping for Montreal to make it over CBJ. The Habs for nothing else aside from mystique are seemingly alwaysna tough out. Tampa will probably sweep the Jackets.

Still a lot to be decided this last day at least!

Pens dominated most of the first period and had a 1-0 lead from a goal from Crosby off a nice feed from Guentzel but Wilson makes a really bad turnover and gives the Rangers a mini breakaway to tie it up after one period 1-1

Went right over Murrayís glove. He shouldíve had it but not good to give it away like that

If Murray just stays up, that shot hits him in the chest, but these goalies all want to flop right away.

Kind of a blah second period as it is still tied 1-1. Pens had 2 power plays but barely got the puck to the net. Kessel is passing up allot of opportunities to shoot. Something is really wrong with that IMO. Murray wasnít tight on the post late in the period and one almost got by him but luckily, almost doesnít count.

Letting a bad team stay in the game usually doesnít wind up turning out good

Also the islanders and Carolina are winning their games

Luckiest goal I think I have ever seen someone score! Goes off Hornqvist Ďs skate and right to Bjugstad who almost whiffs on the shot but it trickles in to give the Pens a 2-1 lead

All the Pens need is a tie to finish no lower than 3rd, but coach genius puts out another 4 F PP that backfires allowing a SH goal and 3-2 NYR lead. Now the Pens are going to end up playing Wash in the first round of the playoffs when all they needed to do was play smart, safe hockey.  >:(

Guentzel scores late to get the game to OT and secure a series with NYI.  Pens lose in OT but didnít matter.

very disappointing game. Pens played really sloppy and continued to let a bad team stay in the game and they wind up losing because of it. I know a loss doesn't matter because they got a point but IMO, that's not the way you want to be playing going into the playoffs. Power play looked just awful today and Murray is giving up questionable goals.

I said it before. This team can either win the Stanley Cup or be bounced in the first round. Such a Jekyl and Hyde team this season. I will still be rooting for a Pens vs Vegas Finals!

I'm hearing Pens vs Islanders might be starting on Wednesday

It's so obvious that it hardly matters who the head coach is. The players just play however they want. Of course the owner set the precedent, so no wonder. They were somewhat more disciplined than the 1st game at Det, but they faced a team that wanted to skate and play pond hockey and the Pens were more than willing to accomodate that. The Pens are undeniably a highly skilled team and they love to show their skill off. No surprise they were fortunate to get the 1 pt they needed to clinch 3rd.

On the plus side, it was nice to see Sid get 100 pts and Guentzel 40 goals.

Pens open on Wed at NYI. I'll bet NBCSN's audience will be enthralled to see the clutching, grabbing, trapping, interference-based hockey as practiced by the Devils, er Islanders.
