Title: Local Bowl Game scenarios
Post by: Nicky on November 11, 2018, 11:15:13 AM
Been a while since all three went Bowling together, so an early look at local Bowl Game scenarios:

PITT
Looking like it'll be a game between Dec 28th and Dec 31st at somewhere like the Sun, Belk, Camping World or Music City.  Just getting to the ACC Champ Game doesn't guarantee Pitt very much, being a 5-loss team that doesn't traditionally travel great.  The ACC will probably not get a New Years Six bid with Clemson being in the Playoff.  Camping World gets the first pick of ACC teams.  Belk probably wants NC State.  Pinstripe probably wants Syracuse/BC.  So maybe Syracuse goes to Camping World and Pitt to Sun?

PSU
Looking like either the Citrus or Outback on Jan 1.

WVU
Looking real good for a New Years Six game if they beat Oklahoma State.  That will then set up playing Oklahoma two weeks in a row (last game of regular season, and Big12 Champ Game.  If that happens, both will get New Years Six invites, one to the Peach and one to the Sugar.

ACC can get 2 in New Yearís Six if Pitt wins the ACC.  Would know Clemson out of the playoff but both would get in New Year 6 Games.

If Pitt somehow gets to the ACC Title Game and pulls off the massive upset perhaps we get a backyard Brawl in a Bowl Game.

I've been the eternal optimist Pitt fan here for months.  But they aren't going to a New Year's Six bowl!

Probably Sun or Pinstripe.

I have seen projections with them in the Belk Bowl vs Florida and Sun Bowl vs Arizona State.

Sun would be fun playing a Pac12 school.  I just assumed the Bell would be a shoo-in for NC State (ticket sales and local flavor over the holidays).

I think Penn State can still get a New Years 6 game. If there arenít enough 2 loss teams in the power 5, they can choose a 9-3 team. So it would presumably be between Penn State or Texas, who would draw the best.

ESPN has PSU back in the Fiesta Bowl.  They will get the 3rd best bowl of the Big Ten teams, leap frogging Michigan State.

It will be between them and any other 3 loss team assuming Syracuse loses to ND. If Syracuse wins and finishes 10-2, they would be the 12th team.

Texas is the only other potential 3 loss team that might go ahead of PSU. Actually that would be fairly interesting. Not sure who theyíd choose for the Peach or Fiesta bowls in that scenario. But if WVU loses to Ok State and Oklahoma, both PAU and Texas would go.

There's a few notable sites that have Florida taking the last spot over Texas, and Penn State.

Ok.  Here's what this week's newest projections look like.  ESPN only major outlet with no updated projections yet.

PITT
Projections still all over the place.  Have seen Camping World, Pinstripe, Belk and Music City today.  Haven't seen Sun anywhere this week.  Opponents have varied from WVU, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M and Iowa State.

PSU
Every projection site showing the New Years Six Peach/Fiesta vs LSU or the New Years Day Citrus/Outback vs Miss State or Texas A&M.

WVU
Have seen Camping World Or Texas Bowl vs Auburn, NC State or Pitt.

Updated thru Thanksgiving weekend games:

PITT
Still the usual suspects: Belk, Music City, Sun, Military, Pinstripe.  If they lose to Clemson and have 6 losses, they will diminish them a bit to one of the lower of those five bowls.  But that might be good.  It would pair them against a lesser team like Temple, Vanderbilt or ASU.  That would keep them away from the likes of Miss State, Iowa State, South Carolina or Missouri.

PSU
Pretty much guaranteed the Citrus/Outback on New Years Day vs the SEC.  Like opponents LSU, Texas A&M, Kentucky or Miss State.  Still a slight chance of a NY6 slot.  If Georgia loses to Bama, they'll be a NY6 team.  Florida is already a NY6 team.  LSU losing last night really hurts them, as the committee may not put three teams from one conference in the NY6.  If Texas loses to Oklahoma, it could open the door for PSU to go over Texas.

WVU
Camping World or Texas Bowl still looking like their landing spot.  Against an SEC or ACC team.

Washington vs Ohio State Rose

Michigan vs Washington State Fiesta

Looks good.  UCF will be interesting.  They only beat Memphis by 1 point with Milton.  Will have their hands full without him this weekend.

Well I like the idea of an instate game between ICF and Florida. Think it would be pretty cool for the fanbases.

Also like the rematch of the 98 Rose Bowl between Michigan and Washington State. What a game that was. So Iím pulling for those scenarios.

Iím sure Washington has met Ohio State in the Rose Bowl at some point. But it had to have been prior to 1990 because thatís all the further my memory goeszbsck to.

I took a quick look of Rose Bowl history and incredibly did not see that matchup.

Wow. That is somewhat surprising. I would imagine those programs are within the top 5 behind USC, Michigan and maybe UCLA for Rose Bowl appearances all time.

Maybe Utah would beat Washington to make their first appearance. That would be cool for their fans. I mean why else join the PAC 10. Thatís got to be at the top of the list.

Ohio State has been there a ton but UW not as much. They had their powerful run late 80s/early 90s but not too much before that. Stanford for instance I think has played in more than UW, even before their modern renaissance under Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw.

Fun stat that I had on a trivia game I won is that somehow Arizona has never made it to a Rose Bowl.  They are the longest tenured PAC 12 team without getting their.

Also fun fact is that Pitt has made it there as many times as Penn State.

Also, also here is the wikipedia entry from W&J making the game back in 1922.  I love the history of sports with their weird quirks and oddities.

The undefeated Washington & Jefferson Presidents, with their black quarterback Pruner West, tied the great UCalifornia team in the Tournament of Roses game.  W&J played only 11 players in the game and had several TD's called back--word in these parts were for 'mysterious violations'.....  The only scoreless tie in the history of the Granddady of them all.

West was posthumously honored a couple years back for his courage then and his life's work.  West, by the way, was also a Washington High School graduate.

Washington just intercepted Utah for the 3rd time. They lead 10-3 with 4 minutes left. Looks like there is a good shot they are headed to the Rose Bowl to face Ohio State, Northwestern or Michigan. Iíd say itís probably about 90% chance of Ohio State.

Washington is boring as hell, but their CB/S, Byron Murphy, is gonna be a first round pick in April and he was a difference maker last night.  If they face OSU in the Rose, it'll be a manslaughter unless OSU is disinterested or has guys not play in preperation for the Draft.

How dreadful would Washington/Northwestern be!

Duke beat Oregon State in the Rose Bowl played in Durham, NC. It was move there in 1942 because of the hysteria over the Japanese attacking in California.

Oklahoma ices with a late TD to eliminate Ohio State. Now it is between Georgia and Oklahoma for the final spot. If Georgia wins, theyíll make it along with Alabama and elinate Oklahoma. If Alabama wins, Georgia is out.

I honestly think making the playoffs would be more damaging to the OSU program than playing in the Rose Bowl.

Per sources on twitter, Pitt is looking at a Tier 1 Bowl if they keep it close tonight.  They get their doors blown off a lower tier bowl.

I say just win the game and play in the Peach or Fiesta.

From twitter: Brett McMurphy

Some last minute shuffling going on w/ACC bowls, sources told @WatchStadium. Looks like Syracuse now to Camping World, Miami to Pinstripe, NC State to Gator, Pitt to Sun, Virginia to Belk

All of a sudden, "Tier 1" has become a thing on social media amognst Pitt folks.  I don't even think most know the difference or ever heard of the phrase before the VT game.

To most fans and alumni, a bowl is a bowl and we're finally going to one.  Type "Tier 1 Bowl" into a Twitter search and it's basically only Pitt, VT and Syracuse fans bickering about who belongs where.

I've no idea what Tier 1 means.  Primetime starting times?  I don't think any of the Bowls that KR posted about that McMurphy listed sound any better than the others.  Who knows.  I do remember a time, a decade or longer ago,  when the Gator Bowl was a good thing.

Sun Bowl
Pitt vs Stanford

Camping World Bowl
West Virginia vs Syracuse

Citrus Bowl
Penn State vs Kentucky

Iím guessing if Pitt has knocked off Miami and been respectable vs Clemson, we may have gotten The Backyard Brawl Bowl Game.

Good winnable game for Pitt.  Just like Pitt, Stanford has struggled mightily against the better ranked teams they've played.  Stanford has very little speed on the perimeter, and it sounds like one time Heisman hopeful Bryce Love will skip the game to prepare for the NFL Draft.

Simply put, this ain't your daddy's Stanford team.  The Cardinal have had only one other season this bad since 2009.

Sun Bowl

Last time Pitt played in the NYE Sun Bowl...my daughter was in the Pitt Band. The the Pitt boosters had the Band kicked off their plane so the jock sniffers could all get home for their NYE parties, while the Band got home at 3am on a later flight.  Hope they treat the band better now.

Last Sun Bowl appearance may have been the worst Sun Bowl ever.  Lost to Oregon State 3-0 in a game where the wind made passing impossible.

Actually the game is a really big deal in the El Paso area, they usually sell quite a bit of tickets to locals who make a day of it for the holiday.

This is not a good Stanford team, so I assume they won't travel quite as well as the normally do.  And I doubt Pitt travels well.  But I expect a decent crowd if the weather cooperates.

Correct both of you haha.

Kind of a nightmare game in terms of traveling fan bases (neither travels well), distance of travel, and lack of overall importance, but yes this is an event for the locals.

To clarify I am not not going because of tickets. I'm not going because I have 2 kids under 5 and a third on the way haha. I can't imagine making any non-driviing sports trips for the next many many years. With that said when my boys are of age I would LOVE to begin a tradition of trying to see EVERY MLB ballpark!

IIRC, this stadium is very close to some large hills, and I seem to remember a few large tailgate parties looking down into the stadium that included a few huge cactus in attendance, and possibly some Grand Canyon plateaus/mountains off in the distance.

Correct. Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ is famous for this also. I was looking at some pics I think that the plateaus are closer to Sun Devil (or at least better viewing angles) but I believe that one could do the same thing at Sun Bowl Stadium.
