Title: Pitt 2018
Post by: Nicky on November 06, 2018, 03:13:22 PM
Season starts tonight.  They play 5 cupcakes to start the year, so will probably get off to a good start.  YSU first up this evening.

Pitt up 32-12 on VMI.

Again these are cupcake teams but Pitt lost some of these games last year and struggled in others.  Any win is a good thing for this program as they try to rebuild.

Pitt won 8 games at the front of the schedule against cupcakes last year, going into conference play around New Years.  My guess that number goes to at least 10 or 11 this year, as the schedule is easier this year leading up to ACC play.  And big the difference will be the wins that they will get in the ACC as compared to last year, resulting in a much better season.

They'll have to work for wins in the ACC, for sure.  The conference collapsed around them in football this year, even at the top - but that won't happen at the top of the hoops conference.  The guard play alone will have them in almost every game this year.  They are still gonna miss the presence of a true big man against the better teams but the guards are fun to watch so far.

Yes! Definitely an encouraging sign. Although it would be nearly impossible for a power five hoops team to be worse than last season's Kevin Stallings lead team.

I agree. Very nice to see Pitt being able to put up a lot of points. Is this showing just how bad Stallings was at coaching this team last season? Or was there a lot of turnover on players from last season to this season?

Best win of the year for Pitt as they beat previous undefeated Saint Louis in a neutral floor game.  Pitt wins 75-73 to move to 6-0 on the year.

I actually saw St Louis live last year!  When they played against Duquesne down at the Palumbo.  Duquesne actually won, St Louis looked terrible.  They are surely improved.

Between now and New Years, Pitt plays five more cupcakes.  Along with Iowa and WVU.  Hoping for at least 11 wins by New Years, and WVU is actually struggling a bit now.  So they might be ripe for the picking!!

Watching the game on ESPN and looks like Iowa is ranked 14.  Pitt looks light years better than. What we say last year.  Beating a Top 15 team in their building would be a huge statement.

I agree. Pitt looked frazzled and nervous and when they weren't turning the ball over, they were taking some pretty bad shots. But still a gutsy game from Pitt and they should've learned a lot from it

X fouling out caused the frantic chaos at the end.  If he's still in the game, he's coming up the court and driving to the hoop.  This film possibly gives opponents a key...attack X at times and get him in foul trouble.  Pitt struggles mightily to score without him.

Also, they're still in the mix to land Akok Akok.  UConn may be the favorite, but since he hasn't committed yet, he must still be thinking things over.

Pitt down 39-27 at the half to West Virginia.

Man I've had it with these North Alabama, Eastern Shore, VMI, New Orleans, Central Arkansas games. I know why you have to schedule 10 games like this, but it's time to bring on the ACC schedule and some real teams after New Years.

Pitt getting manhandled and destroyed by UNC by over 20+ points at the half.  I'm sure they'll outscore the UNC reserves and make the final score closer.  But they really look like diarrhea today.  Obviously I think they're better than last year.  And I think they'll win some ACC games compared to last year.  But to me they look scared, timid, just bad today.  It's ok to mutually be better than last season but just abysmal today.
Title: Re: Pitt 2018

Game was worse than score showed.  CBS Sports Network has Pitt's strength of schedule (before UNC) at 313 of 353 Div I schools.  So nothing really prepared them for today.

Yes Capel is an upgrade.  Yes I think they will win ACC games this year.  But today was a reminder, maybe a shot a reality, that there's gonna be more games like today going forward than there will be 25 point wins over cupcakes.

Need a big man.

Was also awesome to see The Pete packed.

They haven't even played the bad teams in the ACC yet.  Anything near .500 in conference and a win or two in ACC Tourney may get them an at-large.  NIT at very least.

anybody watch the Pitt vs Syracuse game? I know Pitt lost by 11 but how did they look. Were they in the game at all at any time?

Just wondering. Vegas has Syracuse a 7.5 favorite. I thought Pitt might have kept it closer and was gonna put some money on it. Glad I didn't
Title: Re: Pitt 2018

Pitt had a chance to take the lead maybe 5:00 into the second half before things unraveled a bit.

Pitt really struggled getting into the paint vs the Syracuse zone defense. I'm as optimistic as anyone but it kind of felt like a reminder that they aren't quite there yet kind of game. No shame in the loss but it was obvious who the better team was.
Title: Re: Pitt 2018
Post by: Nicky on January 21, 2019, 12:02:10 PM
agree with YIG, score was actually a bit closer than the last 10 minutes actually was.  You'd have to think as they play deeper into the ACC schedule, they'll see a few more zone defenses.  Luckily there's actually a lot of parity after Duke/UVA.  So they'll have ample opportunities for more wins.
Title: Re: Pitt 2018
Post by: Nicky on January 24, 2019, 07:21:15 AM
I know there's not much banter here except for after the wins, but Pitt hung around for a bit against Duke.  Final score made the game seem a bit closer than it actually was, as Duke lost some interest the last five minutes with the lead over 20 points.  But nonetheless Pitt hung around for awhile at least.

Next up is Louisville on Saturday, whom Pitt has already beaten.  Then Clemson on Tuesday, who is tied for last place in the ACC with only 1 conference win.  So a couple more chances at wins are upcoming.
Title: Re: Pitt 2018
Post by: KidRaven on January 24, 2019, 05:49:46 PM
Duke is basically a NBA lottery team.  Team has so much star power that Jay Z showed up to The Pete to watch.

I was happy to see Pitt battle the entire 40 minutes.  The ACC is a beast and it will be a grind for a young team.  They are far and away better than last year and their backcourt will be tough to handle for years to come.
Title: Re: Pitt 2018

Really ugly second half against Louisville today.  Clemson on Tuesday.  Clemson has been a last place ACC team for almost the entire season so there's a real good chance to grab a win.

Scoring has been a problem lately.  Clemson, who is 1-6 in the conference, offers up a chance to remedy all that has gone wrong during the current losing streak.  Also coming up in the next couple weeks are Wake Forest (1-6), BC (2-4) and Clemson 1-6) again.

It feels like they have not won a road game since Dixon left. I realize that is slight hyperbole, but not too far from the truth! I believe that he who shall not be named had one road win at Maryland in November 2016. Their other designated road wins are neutral sites.

While Capel has brought energy and a couple of nice young players, he certainly has not brought even the slightest semblance of an offense. Everything is one on one. They actually have the highest blocked shot rate in the country. Of 353 teams. Over 15% of their shot attempts are blocked. Thatís a sign of guys getting stuck somewhere they shouldnít be.

Duquesne stages an incredible comeback tonight.

Trailing 41-22 at the half, in which they went the last several minutes of the first half without scoring, they stormed back to win 75-72.

This changes everything for their season. They now sit in position to take control of their season Saturday against Dayton.

Title: Re: Pitt 2018
Post by: Nicky on February 05, 2019, 09:36:02 PM
Really struggled against the zone again for the most part.  Looking back, it's a good thing Pitt didn't play Syracuse earlier in the season, because once that film got out, everyone has played zone against Pitt and they've had no answer for it.  Get the feeling a couple of those early close wins may have been losses had Pitt seen more zones in those games (which they didn't).

Regardless, still have games left against the bottom ACC teams, so have to hope they can squeeze out some more wins.

I know Pitt is young, and that's been a crutch to fall back on, but honestly who isn't young in college hoops these days?  Clemson and now Wake both had frosh as their leading scorers too.

Capel says the right things. Stallings didnít. Only difference between them now other than they actually ran sets under Stallings.
Title: Re: Pitt 2018
Post by: bftigers on February 14, 2019, 06:51:59 AM
Everybody needs to relax.  Capel inherited an absolute abortion of a program yet brought in a top 35 recruiting class in the country. He was here for a few months and still brought in quality kids.  2 of the recruits reclassified and should still be playing high school hoops.

They need bigs and shooters first and foremost. This is going to be a process and let's see in 3 years where the program is at.  He's missed out on a couple bigs recently but it's nice to see them on the final 2 or 4 for these players considering just how bad Pitt has been. It's going to take time.

Stallings was a complete joke and to say their only difference is their communication skills is absurd.
Title: Re: Pitt 2018
Post by: BALDWINTRACK on February 14, 2019, 07:58:11 AM
Stallings won with junior and senior experience at Vanderbilt. He was never given that opportunity that people say Capel deserves.

I think both guys stink to be honest. Just donít understand why people are so quick to stick up for Capel other than the fact that heís not Stallings.

Title: Re: Pitt 2018
Post by: yannessa_is_god on February 14, 2019, 02:58:07 PM
Where Capel can be defended over Stallings is what they inherited. Stallings inherited a tournament regular and was supposed to be the hire to get them to the next level. He responded by running the program into the ground very quickly. Capel inherited the worst power 5 team in the country and is being asked to turn them around. Just as a hypothetical, if Capel succeeds Dixon then the expectations for him are certainly different, and if he would have delivered Stallings results then IMO he gets run out of town right away also. Painting Stallings as a tell it as it is prick vs Capel as a skilled politician who can just orate better is unfair to both men.

Pitt gets off the schneid against ND this afternoon.  Both teams finish with matching 3-15 ACC records.  Crazy thing is, as good as UVA, UNC and Duke are.....the rest of the ACC was really, really down this year.  The bottom 6+ teams are really bad.  Pitt could easily win a tournament games against one of these other bad teams in the opening round.

Glad to see Pitt finally stop that losing streak

Pittís win puts them as the 14 seed in the tournament.  They get Boston College in the first round and if they can pull off a win, Syracuse waits them in the second round.

Anybody watch the Pitt gam last night? I was too involved in hockey but I see that Pitt defeated Boston College 80-70. Looks like Pitt went out and jumped out to a big lead in the first half 36-21 and were down 44-49 in the second half but overall, won the game by 10 points

2 wins in a row for Pitt didn't happen much for them this season (if at all?)

Not a Pitt fan but Iíll be cheering them on tonight and tomorrow against the two biggest schmucks in sports. Joe Paterno, I mean Jim Boeheim and Coach K.
